* It can easily be adjusted to very small / narrow surfaces where other fixed size tiles such as conventional ceramic tiles can't.
* Feels comfortable to walk on.
* Can be used for dry surfaces as well as wet surfaces such as shower flooring or as a sink backsplash.

Tips!

* Upon completion, it is important to wait the adhesive's recommended drying time before you begin on grouting.

* Laminate the stones with a sealer prior to installation - it'll protect it from liquids, dirt and detergents transforming it even more durable.

It is considered as a perfect alternative to traditional tiling such as ceramics - DIY Natural Stone Tile remodeling. When you touch these natural panels you immediately feel pure nature in your hands. The following article will describe how by using these nature-made panels you'll be able to remodel any surface at home.

Some basics

Natural Stone Tile redecoration is based on unified naturally polished stones manually sorted and then glued onto a sq/ft mesh backing. The islands of Bali & Sumatra in Indonesia are probably the largest source of these beautiful rock tiles. The fact that this tiling method is so easy and practical enables you to redecorate almost anywhere: Countertops for kitchens and bathrooms, shower floors, all types of backsplashes and walls, wine cellars, and fireplaces.

Main benefits

By now we clearly notice how this unique solution transforms our home design easier:

* Easy to be replaced if needed.
* It can easily be adjusted to very small / narrow surfaces where other fixed size tiles such as conventional ceramic tiles can't.
* Quick & easy installation that doesn't require any special skills or professional background.

Need some good tips?

* Most recommended grout is sanded grout - it is suitable for both internal and external use.

* When you prepare the grout avoid adding too much water in the initial mix - that additional water can result in weak grout that can flake.

* In order to maintain these natural stones properly, it is recommended to apply sealants every two to three years.

We could easily find many other advantages provided by this fun & easy coating technique simply because any average and unprofessional home-maker can do it easily by him/herself.

Conclusion

Natural Stone Tile technique is an excellent choice because after your first successful installation you'll be able to use it on other surfaces at home or in the office much faster and more efficiently. If you wish to succeed with your first installation it is recommended to keep these tips and advices once you prepare for installation.

I need floor tiles for the kitchen, relatively inexpensive - I was thinking natural stone (as I used Tavertine on the walls in my bathroom and sparkly granite on the floor there) but I canot find anything suitable and relatively inexpensive for my kitchen - everything is £22+ per M2. And I don't want to use ceramic tiles.
So I am wondering - does anyone know new natural stones that are cheaper (something not very widely used) or have any exiting new ideas for floor covering (not wood or carpets or linoleum)

Thanks!

Interest in all the Natural Stone Tiles continues to escalate, for example limestone, marble, and granite. This family of natural materials requires thorough understanding, laying by a professional tiler and an adequate care and maintenance program. Having said that, it is no exaggeration to say that ceramic tile manufacturers worldwide have become passionate about replicating the look of Natural Stone Tiles. There are ceramic tiles that look like timber, slate, marble, granite and in some cases the effect is so realistic you have to bend down and actually feel the material. That is interesting, because no matter which way you look at it, nobody really spends a lot of time feeling carpet or vinyl, but tile, in whatever form, invites consumers to touch it. It is as if that will impart a better understanding of its aesthetic possibilities or true potential.

Natural Stone cannot be truly imitated. No two pieces are really the same and it is important to recognise that it is necessary to exhibit as much care in material selection at the installation stage as it is at the point of purchase.

It is important to note that maintenance is a key issue, but in spite of potential difficulties, the Natural Stone Tile family offers magnificent potential for the creation of a floor or wall finish that will remain durable and aesthetically pleasing for a lifetime.

Limestone

Rock that is mainly made of calcite, a mineral form of calcium carbonate, is known as limestone. It forms when the carbonate crystallises out of solution. This can evolve in many different ways, leaving behind a different kind of limestone every time.

Most limestone is typically grey; however, almost every other colour has been found over time.

Limestone can form almost completely without the presence of acid from organisms. It is simply forced out of solution, by evaporation. More often, though, limestone is formed by the work of organisms, such as aquatic ones.

Limestone makes an excellent building material because it can be easily worked. It can even be used for the purification of waste water and gases! Most limestone tends to be of fairly uniform tonality but, as always, the exception confirms the rule - some limestones have strong markings, such as blotches or strong veins.

Marble

Marble is a metamorphic rock, formed when limestone is subjected to enormous forces inside the earth\'s crust. This process, called re-crystallization, causes changes in texture and composition. Fossilized materials, along with carbonates, form large, coarse grains of calcite. Any impurities present affect the mineral composition and the colour of the marble that forms.

Marble is found in many countries and in all corners of the globe.Today, the quarrying and production of marble is a very involved and highly automated process using a variety of purpose -built machines. Nevertheless, the human eye remains the crucial factor when evaluating and classifying the product.

Marble has long been valued for its beauty and strength; it was and still is widely used in buildings, monuments and sculptures. Even the ancient Greeks used marble for just this purpose; and who has not heard of Michelangelo, the undisputed master from Carrara who used marble for his statues?

Granite

Granite is classified as an igneous rock. It is formed when hot magma from the earth\'s core cools very slowly and crystallizes. The mineral grains that are formed are large enough to be clearly distinguishable; interlocked like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. This is what makes Granite very strong and durable - ideal for building and construction.

Granitic rock makes up a large part of every continent on this earth. Its main mineral ingredients - quartz, alkali and plagioclase feldspar, hornblende and biotite mica will - determine (by and large) its colour.

On rare occasions, such as volcanic eruptions, the granitic magma cools too quickly to form large crystals. The resulting rock, called rhyolite, has the same mineral composition as granite but is fine grained.

Granite is a popular material for surfaces subject to many and varied impacts, such as kitchen benches and vanities, steps and floors in \'high traffic\' areas. Some granites have a quite spectacular appearance and are used for their visual impact, such as on facades.

Although a kitchen tile is usually found in kitchens, there are other areas in your home that can benefit from kitchen floor tiles. These tiles became very popular since it is water-resistant and can be cleaned easily. This popularity led to the production of a variety of colors and designs that you can be proud to place all over your house.

In The Kitchen
The kitchen is the most obvious place where you can find a kitchen tile and it is very prone to stains and spills everyday. With all the kitchen activities going on especially on occasions, I doubt that you would want to strain your back in cleaning the floors. So install kitchen tiles to make life easy.

In The Bathroom
You can also use kitchen tiles in the bathroom since it also suffers a regular downpour of spills and stains. The kitchen tile’s water resistivity is very important most especially in the shower room since it is exposed to water and moisture.

In The Patio
You might not expect to put a kitchen tile in the patio since it is usually made of wood or ceramic tiles. But, it is actually practical to put kitchen tiles in the outdoor patio since it is exposed to a lot of environmental elements.

So you see, a kitchen tile is an all-around tile that you can use anywhere in your house. It is both durable and beautiful that it is a perfect tile option that will surely last you a lifetime.

Beauty and toughness are just a few of the reasons most people would like to have ceramic floor tile in their homes. Yes, the up front cost are higher but the look of the designs, the feel of the texture and the durability of ceramic floor tile make the cost to the homeowner completely worth the time and investment.

Ceramic floor tile is more expensive to purchase but the cost will be worth it if you are planning to sell your home, re-financing or getting a home equity loan. Vinyl or other types of flooring are not always a bad choice but ceramic floor tile will add value to your home and last much longer.

Selecting The Right Stuff

If you are planning to install ceramic floor tile yourself, the shopping process can be a bit confusing and overwhelming. Start with selecting a tile with neutral colors. You will be making a large investment so you do not want to select a color or pattern that you do not like after the job is completed.

Ceramic floor tile is made in batches called dye lots. From batch to batch, small differences in the colors can make a big difference in the look of your new floor. Ask your salesperson to check that all of the tiles you are buying has the same dye lot number.

Buy enough tiles to do the job and then some. You will make mistakes when cutting ceramic floor tiles to fit around corners, cabinets and along walls. Even new tiles may have small chips, cracks or blemishes so ask your salesperson about the return policy for defective tiles. Most retailers will refund your money for full, unopened boxes but don’t return all of your tiles. After some years, a few of your tiles may have cracked or chipped and having a few extra tiles of the same pattern and dye lot will keep your ceramic tile floor looking as good as the day you installed it.

You will also need the right tools for installing ceramic floor tile. Tile cutters, nippers and ceramic saws are needed for a professional look to your project. If you are only doing a small area, then consider renting these tools at your local rental shop as this will save you money. If you have a large project or find you enjoy the look of ceramic floor tile and want to do other areas of your home, then the cost of the tools will only be a small part of the total cost of your project.

The ceramic tile has been around for 4000 years and was primarily made by early people to decorate their living spaces. In fact, there are fine-looking ceramic tiled surfaces that have been found in ancient structures such as the ruins of old Babylon, some ancient Greek cities, and some very old pyramids. Decorative tiling is said to be invented in the East where it flourished with great popularity and influenced a great variety of design.

But later on, a slab has been designed to aid in forming these clay tiles which will then undergo a firing process in an extremely hot kiln that will harden the body of the clay and give it a surface glaze. There are two kinds of surface types of a ceramic tile: the unglazed ceramic tile and the glazed ceramic tile. Unglazed ceramic tiles only undertake one firing process while the glazed ceramic tiles undergo two. Ceramic tiles also have a wide variety of decorating techniques such as glazing, making encaustics or inlaid tiles, mosaics, carving, and hand painting.

A ceramic tile is a very well-rounded tile and is used in almost anywhere like walls, floors, fireplaces, ceilings, and building exteriors. And it’s not really surprising that it is this popular since ceramic tiles possess great characteristics such as its strong resistance to impact, stain, and abrasion. Indeed, a tile that is beautiful inside and out.
